  I agree with your idea. You say that the European languages are similar, such as German, France, italian etc.
For the Asia language system, there is also similar system. For example, chinese are close to cantonese, Taiwanese, Hakka, etc.
Actually, there are more than 200 dialects in China, and used only only system of chinese words.
In addition, chinese are close to Japan words. Thus, even chinese cannot speak Japan lanuage, we can read some of the Japan words.
So Asia also have its language system.

Does '里' mean kilometre? I thought that was gong li or something, and 里 was an ancient measurement of length/distance? Let me know! I'd like to learn.

  Yes,li里 is the measure standard of how far you go. So this phrase metaphorically means that someone or some place get much progress in a short period of time.
(But in ancient china, the measure standard was changing in different dynasty. Thus, li里 does not completely equal to the English miles)
